The Roost Winery – Town of Blue Mountains

The Roost Winery project was a welcome challenge for the GJ Custom Contracting team. This huge project entailed a complete conversion of a 19th Century barn into a multi-level winery that houses a full wine production and holding area (lower level) and a beautiful event space with a tasting bar and private tasting rooms (main level).

As the general contractors for the entire project, the GJ team was excited to tackle such a unique and complex project that was completed in two different phases.

On the lower level, the GJ team removed concrete floors and installed a custom draining system designed for wine production. They also moved and reinstalled the walls and ceiling to accommodate the specialized equipment. The GJ Team completed the lower level of the barn specifically for ‘wine production’ where the Roost staff processing the grapes and produces the wines for which they have become very popular.

Before the event space could be built, the GJ Custom Contracting team first needed to prepare the barn by ensuring it was structurally sound then insulating, building interior walls and defining the spaces. On the main level, all new flooring, drywall, and windows were installed and the beautiful space started to take shape. The post and beam detail within the main level is stunning, paying tribute to the barn’s history. The tasting bar contains custom cabinetry and the entire space is fitted with elements to maintain the barn’s rustic charm inside and out.

The barn’s exterior has been carefully restored. The GJ Custom Contracting team created a wooden canopy to define the large entryway and added a stone façade built with Armour stone. The surrounding grounds were landscaped complete with a stone patio, retaining wall built with Armour stone. Finally, the GJ team graded the parking areas and poured a large concrete pad for parking lot/material handling.

The client now has a building to showcase their wines that is as unique and delightful as the wines they produce.

Village Conference Centre – Blue Mountain Resort, Town of the Blue Mountains

Based upon the huge success of the Blue Mountain Inn (Lobby, Inn rooms, and Pottery restaurant) renovation and excellent working relationship between Blue Mountain Resort and GJ Custom Contracting, GJ was brought in once again to complete a very ambitious, large scale project for the resort.

The Village Conference Centre is a world class conference space housing over 50,000 square feet of event, tradeshow, and meeting space.  The building features a 10,000 square foot kitchen that was custom built from beginning to end by GJ Custom Contracting. A unique feature of the building is known as The Courts, which is a massive event/tradeshow space that doubles as an indoor tennis facility.

Beyond the custom kitchen, the scope of the project for GJ Custom Contracting included building, installing, and completing all the interior and exterior finishes of the building. GJ worked with engineers and architects employing GJ in-house trades and skilled crafters to complete the project.

Working directly with Blue Mountain Resort for approvals, the year and a half large scale project was completed within the client’s timeline. The end result is an impressive, multi-functional building with design elements that tie it in beautifully with the Intrawest Village aesthetic.

Renovation of Wasaga Beach Vacation Home

When the hit HGTV Canada show Income Property found a renovation project in Wasaga Beach to turn into the next income property for the homeowner, they immediately began their search for a general contractor. After careful consideration, Income Property approached GJ Custom Contracting and the project was theirs.

HGTV and Income Property brought their own design to the Wasaga Beach vacation house, but needed an experienced contractor to execute the plans and work closely with their in-house designer.  The GJ team accepted the challenge, which involved an aggressive 6 week timeline, a strictly-defined budget, and the added pressure of working with multiple designers, producers, a TV host, and a TV show deadline!

The project involved a gut of many elements of the home, some structural changes (wall removed) and many new design features. GJ executed the design plans to perfection while completing the project on time and under budget. The vacation house is now beautifully renovated and in rent-ready state for the high volume summer rental Wasaga Beach commands.

This custom-built, post and beam, 7500 square foot estate home is situated on 25 acres of land. The client had a specific layout and plans to build on this residential property. GJ Custom Contracting acted as the general contractor for the project completing each and every aspect of the custom build.

The GJ team of talented trade people (electricians, plumbers, masons, and carpenters) worked closely with the homeowner to execute the homeowners design vision. Everything in this amazing home is custom. From the trim work, to the kitchen cabinetry, to the vanities in the bathrooms, to the staircase, railings, and catwalk, each element was carefully designed and meticulously created by the GJ Custom Contracting team.

The GJ team installed wide plank hickory flooring throughout the entire space. The 28 foot vaulted ceilings in the great room showcase the custom, wood burning, stone fireplace that was constructed by the team. Additional design features include a live-in nanny loft (sits above the two car garage), family room with wood burning fireplace designed to bring the family together.

  8. The Smoke II – Vaughan

Comments Off on The Smoke II – Vaughan

After the tremendous success of the partnership between The Smoke in Collingwood and GJ Custom Contracting, it was no surprise when the owner and chef approached GJ to completely transform a blank slate of over 6000 square feet of commercial space into The Smoke II in Vaughan.

What was literally a square building is now a fully functioning restaurant with indoor dining space for 174 guests. The GJ Custom Contracting team saw to the coordination and installation of a custom kitchen that boasts the longest cook top in Ontario – an engineering feat involving precision and careful planning.

In addition to the huge dining area and impressive kitchen, the space includes staff areas, reception area, state-of-the-art restrooms, and plenty of storage.

As with the previous project, the client wanted to put his personal stamp on the restaurant, so he was very involved in selecting design elements and colours. The GJ team worked closely with the client to ensure his vision for the Smoke II was realized.

The scope of this project required close coordination with other sub-trades for specific construction and interior finishing elements. GJ Custom Contracting remained in constant contact with all sub-trades through to project completion.

The Smoke II opened its doors to customers in July of 2016 to great acclaim. It continues to rival the neighbouring restaurants in Vaughan much like its sister restaurant in Collingwood.

Comments Off on Blueski George – Custom Home

This contemporary chalet is located in the prestigious Nipissing Ridge area with views to Georgian Bay. Custom designed by Jakop Design Inc, the entire project was managed and executed by GJ Custom Contracting.

The goal of this custom build was to create a lifestyle home where the outside surroundings meet and seamlessly mesh with the home’s interior. When the home owner purchased the land, the vision was to construct a home that would pay homage to the simplicity and serenity of the landscape. The skillful use of natural wood and stone graces both the interior and exterior of the home to accomplish this goal. Working with local vendors, GJ Custom Contracting was able to source the variety of natural stone, marble, and oak used throughout the home.

A must-have for the family was a large, open gathering space in which to entertain family and friends. The stunning 20 foot interior stone wall and 4 foot linear wood burning fireplace with steel surround grace the home’s great room. 11. Pottery Restaurant – Blue Mountain

Comments Off on Pottery Restaurant – Blue Mountain

The client, having worked with GJ Custom Contracting on Blue Mountain Resort projects before, did not hesitate to contact the GJ team with their Pottery Restaurant renovation project. The client wanted the restaurant and kitchen to undergo a complete transformation to deliver a modern and sophisticated dining experience. They brought forth plans to modernize and add an element of sophistication to the Pottery Restaurant, which is located in the Blue Mountain Inn.

The client also required that the restaurant renovation blend well with the other renovations taking place throughout the Blue Mountain Inn. To achieve this goal, GJ Custom Contracting designed and built elements that were reminiscent of design elements they installed within the Inn’s lobby. As an example, the custom-built hostess desk with Caesar stone and marble accents mirrors the lobby front desk. Additional design features include timber accents, custom-built, curved bench seating for booths, and harvest tables. The entire kitchen was stripped out, redesigned, and outfitted with top-of-the line equipment, making it a space in which the chef and supporting staff love to create.

Throughout the process, the GJ Custom Contracting team regularly met with the client and engineers to determine each element of the design. They also worked closely with the VP and Director of Engineering to ensure the project stayed on track, on budget, and was completed on time.

The restaurant now features a light, bright, contemporary interior brimming with rustic charm.

  12. Blue Mountain Inn Lobby

Comments Off on Blue Mountain Inn Lobby

From beginning to end, the GJ Custom Contracting team was pleased to be part of the renovation project that breathed new life into the lobby of the original Blue Mountain Inn. The client, recognizing the dated look of the hotel lobby, wanted to revamp the entire space to provide a sleek and modern design. As a first class resort, they realized a sophisticated hotel lobby was critical as this was the first impression their guests received.
Beyond the dated interior finishes, the layout did not efficiently utilize the space. The GJ team redesigned the layout to maximum effect, which involved removing a main building interior support wall to provide an open concept.
In keeping with the renovations occurring throughout the Blue Mountain Inn, GJ Custom Contracting, worked closely with the client (engineers, the VP and Director of Engineering)to ensure the newly proposed design blended well and met the diverse needs for the space.
Beautiful design elements include herring bone tiled floors, bench seating, and a custom, Caesar stone feature wall and front desk.
At project completion, the client was not only thrilled with the outcome, but also proud to welcome guests to the hotel.
